Sam’s Sample Say: YSL Black Opium

Hi guys!

I don’t know about you, but I’m the kind of person who loves to have a few different perfumes for every occasion. I definitely don’t have a “signature scent” but the couple fragrances that I do have I really, really love.

I don’t have a excessive number of perfumes because buying a full bottle of without giving yourself the chance to wear it is risky! For one, perfumes are usually very expensive. Secondly, you never know how a perfume is going to smell on you specifically. Just because it smells amazing on someone else doesn’t mean it’s going to be amazing on you. Finally, lasting power is huge for me with perfumes. I don’t see the point in spending money on a fragrance that is only going to stick around for a couple of hours.

That is why I definitely recommend trying to get your hands on a free sample and wearing the crap out of it until you are sure that you love it before buying.

Now on to the star of this post, Yves Saint Laurent Black Opium. I am a huge fan of YSL Manifesto, so when they came out with Black Opium I wanted to try it out. Luckily Sephora had a roller ball sample of it for 100 points. I didn’t have to think twice about cashing those in!

I have to admit that I thought I wasn’t a big fan of roller ball perfumes, but after using this one I have changed my tune. I think that it might have something to do with the fact that I love this scent and how long it lasts on me. I previously thought that only sprays would last all day but I clearly haven’t been trying out any good perfumes in roller ball form. I put this on my wrists and neck before I go to work in the morning and I can still smell it when I come home afterwards (and when you’re working 9 hour days, that is impressive!).

To give you a idea of how this smells, here are the notes:
Coffee Accord, Orange Blossom, Cedarwood Essence, Patchouli Essense.

Is the full size worth it?

Like pretty much every other perfume in existence, this one is expensive. A 1.6 oz bottle cost $100 on Sephora, and a 3 oz is $130. A travel size 0.7 oz spray is $35 but is currently out of stock as I am writing this.

However, this perfume is quickly becoming a worthy bottle to add to my collection. It smells amazing and lasts a long time on me. Not to mention, I really like the look of the bottle:

I’m planning on treating myself with a larger size of this once my sample roller ball runs dry. I think that this will be the perfect fall scent 🙂

If you have this and love it, let me know! And what other perfumes do you love? If you like this one than we probably have similar tastes in perfumes 🙂

Thanks for reading!

  1. Great review, I’ll have to go and get myself a sample of this perfume!
I’ve been pretty much wearing Versace’s bright crystal perfume for a couple years now, might be time to try something new!

  2. I went crazy and just bought the 3 oz from Ulta with the free gift set containing this roller ball, a bag and the shimmering body lotion of the same black opium scent. I had never smelled it before but let’s be honest… they had 5x rewards for it and the gift set. 😂I love Yves Saint Laurent normally so I took a chance!
I was instantly happy and this scent lasts all day for me as well. Best $100 I have ever spent! The body lotion takes does have tiny glittery particles but the scent is true to the perfume and very moisturizing.
