High End Makeup Returns

Hi guys!

I just arrived home from a weekend in Montreal and I wanted to write up a quick blog post about some disappointing products that I picked up at the Sephora store. I don’t have a Sephora in my home town, so I was excited (as always) to hit up the actual store instead of just shopping online.

I ended up buying three things: the Clinique All-Over Clearing Treatment (which I have used before and loved), and two makeup items that I had never tried before: Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara and the Anastasia Liquid Lipstick in “Vintage.” I had heard awesome things about the Too Faced Mascara, and the colour of the Vintage liquid lipstick looked stunning, so I wasted no time and put them on that night.
(I have no original photos of the products on because phone quality pictures are incredibly grainy I didn’t have my Canon with me on this trip).

I can’t begin to explain how disappointed I was in the mascara. It literally did nothing for my lashes other than make them darker. When I finished applying it my lashes did not look very pretty, just stumpy. For a $30 mascara I expected it to be way better than it was. I have used multiple drugstore mascaras that have made my lashes much longer and thicker for a third of the price. I am really surprised that I didn’t like it when I have heard such rave reviews on it, but it just goes to show that not all makeup products will perform the same on everyone.

I must have been in Sephora at a peak time, because it was absolutely packed in there as I was shopping. I am not a huge fan of crowds, so I remember seeing this lipstick, thinking “that’s a really pretty colour” and throwing it in my basket without bothering to swatch it out on my hand. I definitely don’t recommend doing that if you’re going to be spending $26 on a lipstick. When I got back to the hotel and applied this onto my lips the colour was sooo dark I was shocked. What a thought was a dark mauve was actually a really dark purple. I already have a couple dark purple colours in my collection, and it isn’t even a colour I wear very often, so I really didn’t need another ($26) option.

Thankfully Sephora has a wicked good return policy and I was able to return both of these items the next day before I left the city. This was the first time ever that I have been very disappointed in my Sephora purchases, and luckily it was when I was buying from a store and not online so I could get my cash back!

If you can relate to this, let me know what items have you weren’t impressed with and have returned to Sephora.

Thanks for reading!

  1. I’ve actually heard so many people rave about that mascara, I am glad I haven’t purchased it! I would be disappointed too. I bought a T3 featherweight luxe 2i hair dryer for $320 from Sephora. I was SO excited and when I got home and used it, it sucked. Like the worst hair dryer I have ever used. Like worse than what you’d get in an old motel. I was horrified and I returned it no questions asked. They have a great return policy!

    1. I know! It’s such a favorite for so many people that I thought I’d love it, but it was crazy how little it did for me. I read after I returned it that it starts to work better after you’ve used it a bunch of times? But for such a expensive mascara I want it to work right away haha. That’s insane!! Thank god they do, that’s so much money to spend on something thats not even as good as a crappy hotel dryer! I’m glad you got your money back 🙂

      1. I’ve had that happen quite a bit though. I’ve heard how amazing products are from others, and I’m like what is this piece of crap?! I’d want an expensive mascara to work immediately! I actually buy most of my mascaras at the drugstore simply because I’ve only tried a few good high end ones worth repurchasing!

      2. The best high end mascara I’ve ever used has got to be Lancôme Hypnôse Star. It gives my lashes the wow factor for sure 🙂 I really like all of Lancômes mascaras actually, but Hypnôse star is the best.
