I just arrived home from a weekend in Montreal and I wanted to write up a quick blog post about some disappointing products that I picked up at the Sephora store. I don’t have a Sephora in my home town, so I was excited (as always) to hit up the actual store instead of just shopping online.
I ended up buying three things: the Clinique All-Over Clearing Treatment (which I have used before and loved), and two makeup items that I had never tried before: Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara and the Anastasia Liquid Lipstick in “Vintage.” I had heard awesome things about the Too Faced Mascara, and the colour of the Vintage liquid lipstick looked stunning, so I wasted no time and put them on that night.
(I have no original photos of the products on because phone quality pictures are incredibly grainy I didn’t have my Canon with me on this trip).
I can’t begin to explain how disappointed I was in the mascara. It literally did nothing for my lashes other than make them darker. When I finished applying it my lashes did not look very pretty, just stumpy. For a $30 mascara I expected it to be way better than it was. I have used multiple drugstore mascaras that have made my lashes much longer and thicker for a third of the price. I am really surprised that I didn’t like it when I have heard such rave reviews on it, but it just goes to show that not all makeup products will perform the same on everyone.
I must have been in Sephora at a peak time, because it was absolutely packed in there as I was shopping. I am not a huge fan of crowds, so I remember seeing this lipstick, thinking “that’s a really pretty colour” and throwing it in my basket without bothering to swatch it out on my hand. I definitely don’t recommend doing that if you’re going to be spending $26 on a lipstick. When I got back to the hotel and applied this onto my lips the colour was sooo dark I was shocked. What a thought was a dark mauve was actually a really dark purple. I already have a couple dark purple colours in my collection, and it isn’t even a colour I wear very often, so I really didn’t need another ($26) option.
Thankfully Sephora has a wicked good return policy and I was able to return both of these items the next day before I left the city. This was the first time ever that I have been very disappointed in my Sephora purchases, and luckily it was when I was buying from a store and not online so I could get my cash back!
If you can relate to this, let me know what items have you weren’t impressed with and have returned to Sephora.
